Monday is here and another week and another month is upon us. I always like to start my mornings by having a read through some online magazines, newspapers and blogs, in addition to some fiction as well as university books. I also shared in my New Years Resolutions for Everyone that I encouraged everyone to start reading some more. Therefore, today I wanted to share with you a few texts to read this Monday, from my recent saves and favourites:

5 THINGS TO READ THIS MONDAY

News

I always start my day reading through online newspapers like The Guardian, BBC, The Independent and more. There is a lot of cruelty and unfairness in the world, but shutting your eyes and ears to it won’t make anything better. That is why I think it is important for everyone to read the news and see what is going on around the world. Today I stumbled upon a lot of stories about how “Black workers ‘face widening pay gap the more qualifications they earn” / “How Black Workers Are Being Paid Less For Doing Exactly The Same Job As White Graduates“.

Feature

I love to both read and write features, so I always save and bookmark the ones I really love. I myself am a sucker for listicles, and as a student on a budget I really enjoyed this “10 foods to make from scratch to save money” feature from The Guardian Lifestyle. I also love everything that has to do with photography, so the articles on “Nikon Takes down plane photo after row” and “Instagram imams are unlikely online hit” really interested me this morning.

Blog

As a blogger myself, I of course follow a lot of blogs via Bloglovin (follow me!) where I frequently save new posts. Last week I saved Josie from FashionMumblr post on “How to Start a Blog and FAQs“. Josie has grown her blog and social media a lot this past year, and I enjoyed reading her tips and general answers on how to start and grow your blog and social media.

Unwritten

As I mentioned on my Facebook-page (follow me!) last night, I am this month starting as a writer for an amazing online magazine called Unwritten. I first found this publication more than a year ago when I read a feature called “I’m only 22 I don’t want someone else to be my whole world” and fell completely in love. Now I am lucky enough to start writing and publish my own work, and I will also share a lot of posts through my social media. This week I fell in love with the post “Stop Looking For ‘The One’ When There’s More Than Just One Out There“, which is kind of in the lines of the first post I read from Unwritten.

Book

Even though I often start and end my days on internet and social media, I love putting my mac and phone away and read a good book. I am this week finishing the book Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll, a book I have been reading for a while but never got around to finish. The book is a “girl-thriller” as I like to call them, similar to Gone Girl and the Girl on the Train, about a girl with a dark secret. The book is actually now in the process of becoming a movie, released later this year.

Did you find anything to read? Should I introduce this as a new feature on the blog?

If you had asked me more than a year ago what my favourite highlighters were, I would have given you a blank look. I always used to prefer a matte look with matte favourite bronzers like Benefits Hula and Too Faced Chocolate Soleil, and to highlight I used a brightening concealer like MACs Prep+Prime Highlighter. It wasn’t until everyone’s skin appeared to be glowing with a youthful and intensive sparkle that I started looking into more glowing highlighters for my face. I liked the combination of a matte and natural full face with some excessive sparkling cheekbones and other highlighted areas. In the beginning all of the products I lusted for seemed to be on the pricier side (like the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit). But after some researching, trying and failing, I now have three favourite highlighters in my collection that I reach for every day. The best thing about them? They are all really affordable.

Top 3 Highlighters

  1. BH Cosmetics Carli Bybel Palette ($12.50) – I have mentioned this palette before and I will surely mention it again. I have to be honest, when my favourite Youtuber launched her own makeup palette I bought it mostly for that reason, it was designed by her. Not that I didn’t expect much, but I was just sure that this $12.50 palette could not stand a chance to my more pricier makeup favourites. Oh how wrong I was. Ever since buying this palette (September), I have used it every single day, either for eyeshadow or highlight. You get four different highlighters in this palette, and I usually use the lightest one or the lightest and second lightest blended together. They are extremely pigmented, sparkly and has a great texture, without being too powdery or having fallout. The shade selection also makes this palette great for a lot of different skin tones! And again, did I mention you get the full palette for only $12.50?!
  2. Soap and Glory Hocus Focus Illuminator (£11) – For those days when I want a bit of a natural glow to my face, but not any extreme glitter sparkle, I reach for the Soap and Glory Hocus Focus. This liquid illuminator is the softest and easiest that I have ever tried, and it blends so naturally on the skin. For £11 you get 30ml worth of product, which will honestly last you forever. When using the product you only need the smallest sized amount and it will blend out and cover everywhere you want. This is also a great product to mix into your moisturiser or foundation for that youthful and illuminated look. Or if want a even more dramatic highlight, use this as a base and then add a powdery highlight on top.
  3. The Balm Mary-Lou Manizer ($24/ £17) – You can’t really talk about highlighters without mentioning the holy grail: The Balm’s Mary-Lou Manizer. It is a tiny bit more expensive than the other two, but still budget friendly and so totally worth it. I am sure you have heard someone talk about this highlighter before, and you might have thought like me: “is it worth the hype?”. I asked myself that question for such a long time, not really in the need of a new highlighter at all, but after a while I just couldn’t resist trying it out for myself. And since then, it has been on my cheekbones right about every single day. Just like the Carli Bybel ones it is extremely pigmented and a little product goes a long way. The shade is perfect, light and glowy (I was afraid it was looking too dark at first, but it is not at all!) and again I believe this is a highlighter that will go well with many different skin tones.

In the age of social media with its likes, followers and picture perfect scenarios, it is difficult not to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others and feeling jealous. We can envy someone else’s looks, intelligence, success, wealth, mate or educational background. No matter how hard you work for something or how good you look, there is always going to be someone better, right? I think we all, often subconsciously, compare ourselves to others and feel the jealousy when they succeed better than you, at least I know I have in the past. But along the lines of 2016 being my year, I have decided to stop letting my jealousy and insecurities define me. Do you want to learn how to do the same?

How to deal with Jealousy

“It’s an ugly way to feel—unhappy because of someone else’s success—but human beings are often ugly”Emma Straub.

1. Be proud of yourself

To some it might sound easier said than done while to others it might sound naive or banal, but it is truly important to be proud of yourself and everything you achieve. In the pursuit of everything you don’t have but feel like you need in your life, it is easy to forget to be grateful of what you actually do have. We all have people around us who care for us, we all have a job/ education or similar that we have worked for, we all have our own unique style and personality and we all basically have the ability to do anything we want in life if we just work hard enough for it. If that is not something to be proud of then I don’t know what.

2. Be proud of your friends

Even though it is easy to get jealous of celebrities with all of their fame, money and followers, that is not really where the big issue normally lies. It is easy to understand that you and those celebrities live in “two different worlds” and therefore it is easier to distant yourself from that fame. When it comes to the jealousy and envy that is actually unhealthy for you, it often has to do with your closest friends. It is (sadly) easy to compare yourself to those you are normally surrounded by or who have some kind of relationship to. As they celebrate a good grade, a huge promotion, winning something, a good relationship, success on their blog/ social media or something similar, the jealousy can quickly come upon you with questions like “why is that not me?”. Instead of feeling proud and happy for that person it is (again, sadly) often normal to feel some kind of envy. This can also result in us undermining that person in our minds and letting the jealousy and envy get the worst of us. But instead of feeling and acting like that, it is important to be proud of your friends for their achievements, and to accept that sometimes it is your turn to shine but right now it is theirs and that’s okay.

3. Turn the jealousy into something positive

Jealousy is normally linked to something negative. Being jealous of someone else, not feeling good enough, not trusting your partner and so on. But what if you could change that feeling into something positive? Whenever you feel the familiar feeling of jealousy creeping up on you, instead of letting it bring you down you should “embrace it”. Not that you should embrace not feeling good enough, but really feel on what it is that is troubling you and how you can change that. Why are you not feeling good enough? Is it because you could have done something better, you did not give it your all or you are not truly being yourself and happy? Try to really figure out why someone else’s achievements are brining you down instead of motivating you to do better, and aim to change that mindset of yours.

4. Stop seeking approval from other people.

Browsing through Instagram a few weeks ago, I came across this Abraham-Hicks quote and I just had to screenshot it. Even though it talks about happiness and independent, I think it relates to the topic of jealousy when it comes to not seeking approval and being dependent on other people. Stop seeking approval from and comparing yourself to other people, you are you and that is damn good enough.

“Tell everyone you know: “My happiness depends on me, so you’re off the hook”. And then demonstrate it. Be happy, no matter what they’re doing. Practice feeling good, no matter what. And before you know it, you will not give anyone else responsibility for the way you feel — and then you’ll love them all. Because the only reason you don’t love them, is because you’re using them as your excuse to not feel good.”

5. Be grateful for the little things

I have briefly mentioned before both on my blog and Instagram that I advice you to start the habit of writing some kind of a gratitude journal. You don’t have to make the biggest deal out of it if you don’t want to, but at least be sure to take a few moments every morning and/or evening to think about what you are grateful for in life. Focus on the positive, focus on the small things. Every day you will experience small great things, but if you don’t appreciate and really think about them they won’t matter as much as if you actually take a moment to think about them. Take a moment to stop, close your eyes, think about your day and smile for the little things, the kind words, the small achievements. It will leave you with a smile on your face and a gratefulness you can keep in mind the next time jealousy comes creeping.

I know what you are thinking, party season is over right? Well, not really. Just because Christmas and New Years Eve has come and gone for now, it does not mean that you have no more occasions to dress up. A new year is here and I am starting it by falling head over heels in love with this gold shimmer maxi dress and glam look:

I have to be honest and  tell you that when I ordered this dress, I did have NYE in mind. I was browsing through some gorgeous festive maxi dresses at House of Fraser when this one caught my eye. I do love a good maxi dress, and this was so elegant and smart while being effortlessly chic. It could easily be styled and dressed both up and down, and with a glam makeup look and big hair it was a perfect choice for NYE. But as the dress unfortunately did not arrive in time, I ended up wearing something else for the occasion (a simple and sexy black jumpsuit).

I almost forgot about the dress until I received a message that I had a package waiting for me a few days ago. I rushed to the post office to pick it up, and as soon as I got home I had to try it on. It was a perfect fit and I fell even more in love.

The colour and shimmer goes perfectly with my freshly coloured hair, and it makes me feel like a princess when wearing it. Waking up early and spending an hour on hair and make up today was definitely worth it as I got to put on this beauty and shoot it with my favourite photographer Anne Marthe Widvey (be sure to check out her blog!).

Now I am packing this beauty of a dress with me to London and hoping for a perfect occasion to wear it soon. We’ll see what 2016 brings.

I have never been a fan of New Years Resolutions, the idea that you were not good enough in something last year and that this is your chance to make it up. As the clock hit 00:00 and another year was here, I did not tell myself that I would exercise more, eat healthier or work harder. I simply agreed that after quite a problematic 2015, 2016 would be my year, where I would be healthy and happy. To me, that is what will be most important this year, the feeling of happiness and self control. If you are not sure how to get there, read through my list of New Years Resolutions for everyone and see what I think is important to do this year:

The Stylish Cupcake New Years Resolutions

1. Breathe

I don’t know about you, but 2015 was quite a hectic year for me. We live in a fast moving world with so many expectations and demands surrounding you, so it is easy to get caught up in stress. Even though I always do try to plan ahead, some things come unexpected in life and can change your course completely. If you find yourself struggling with stress or any other overwhelming bad emotion, take a step back and breathe. No matter if it is school/ work, relationships or anything else stressing you out, remember that you need to put yourself and your health first in any situation. So if you do ever feel like you need a break from life, do it. Take some time to breathe and get your life back on track. This does not make you weak for “giving up”, it makes you strong for fighting back.

2. Explore

I think we all have an urge in us to travel, to explore what is unknown to us. I am sure everyone would love to travel the world and see somewhere new, but sometimes life gets in the way. Traveling can be expensive and time consuming, not as well suited for every lifestyle. But just because you can not take a month of work or afford a plane ride and hotel, that does not mean you can not explore. As everyone is seeking to travel away from where they are at the moment, I think it is important to actually stop and look around on the beauty already surrounding you. It might be your hometown, which you never truly appreciated, an area where you live that you’ve never really paid much attention to, or somewhere not too far away, where you can quickly get by a cheap train ride. The world is full of great and grand places, but what makes the place you are right now any less great and grand?

3. Read

With the age of the internet, social media, blogs, online news and movies, I think a lot of us don’t take enough time off to read. Reading is such an important thing, it will develop you in so many ways and can learn you a lot about life. It can also improve your writing and language skills, but most importantly it will give you some time off from the hectic world around us. I think that reading before going to sleep is a really good habit to keep, as it gives your brain some time to adjust and relax before going to sleep. Turn of your phone, light some candles and read a few pages. It will do so much for you.

4. Love

I know, I know, could this list be any more cliche? Well, “life lessons” often are, but they are still important to be reminded of sometimes. If you have only one resolution this year, make sure it is to love and be loved.  You have so many people around you, friends and family, who love you with all of their heart, so be sure to love them back. Show and tell them how much they mean to you. And more than anything, be sure to love yourself. Prioritise yourself first, appreciate yourself and don’t put yourself down in any way. Get out of any bad relationship/ friendship or habits you have that beat you down. This will be your year to be yourself and be happy.

5. Take care of yourself

In the lines of everything on this list, it is important that you truly take care of yourself. For a lot of people the standard New Years Resolutions is to eat healthier and exercise more, which is one way of taking care of your mental and physical health. This is of course really important and something you should keep in mind, but I don’t like the idea of starting the new year completely changing your habits in the pursuit of a better body or whatever. Instead, agree that balance is key to everything in your life. Do try to exercise more and eat healthier by making more food from scratch, but also allow yourself pizza and chocolate and wine and days where all you do is relax on the sofa. Agree to try to work harder and be better, but also accept it when something comes up and you simply need to take a step back. Always have yourself in mind, your mental and physical health, in everything you do and never push yourself more than you can handle. Take care of yourself, because 2016 will be your year and it would be a shame if you weren’t around to enjoy it.

While everyone has shared their “What I got for Christmas”, “Happy New Year” and “New Years Resolutions” posts, I have been taking a few days off to enjoy with my friends and family. I am not really big on new years resolutions and I actually don’t have any specific ones this year. But, I know that a lot of you guys do enjoy starting your year new and fresh with lots of goals, and if that is what you like then go for it! The resolutions often contain the same ideas, eating healthier and exercising more, which basically evolves around taking care of yourself and your body, which of course is a great idea! So while you start to take care of your health, body and mind, I wanted to share some tops on how to take care of your skin with the Body Shop Tea Tree range:

The Body Shop Tea Tree

I always like to try out new beauty brands and lines, but one favourite that I keep coming back to is The Body Shop. I love right about everything from The Body Shop, and when I got gifted quite a few items from there for Christmas, I couldn’t have been happier. I specifically wished for products from the Body Shop Tea Tree range, which is a great line for anyone with young and blemished skin. It is clinically proven to give visibly clearer skin, and the range works hard to combat existing blemishes without the adverse effect of overly stripping oils for the skin’s surface.

The Body Shop Tea Tree

I first tried out this specific range many years ago while I was living in Qatar. I bought the Body Shop Tea Tree Face Mask (which seems to be sold out everywhere in Norway?!) one day, and I instantly fell in love. This year, after trying out quite a few different cleansers and creams, I decided to go back to my old favourite and try out the whole range. I now have a lot of the products in the range, and I have tested them out over the last couple of weeks. Already they have made my skin feel clearer, softer and smoother, and I can see that my spots are getting less visible. Even though I love the whole range, my favourite products has to be the Face Mask (which I don’t have on hand at the moment), the Skin Clearing Lotion (which is really strong and makes your skin burn a bit when applying it the first few times, but it leaves such a great finish) and the Pore Minimiser (which has been my go-to primer lately).

The Body Shop Tea Tree

Taking care of your skin is so important, so if you have not already started to daily properly cleanse your skin, you need to start now! If you have young, normal to oily and a blemished skin, I recommend this range of products to you. If you have a different type of skin, I am sure that you can find another great range at The Body Shop, the love of my life.

Before going back to Norway I had to do one of the emotionally hardest things I have done since coming to London. Saying goodbye to someone is never easy, but luckily we made the most out of it by having tea and cake at the amazing Sketch.

Tea at Sketch

Georgina has been my best friend and fashion partner in crime since my first day in London. I moved away from family and friends to start a university life in London, and she was the first person to open her arms and let me in. But next week it is her time to move away from friends and family and explore another side of the world, when she is moving to Australia for a semester. Therefore, we of course needed a proper goodbye meal before I went to Norway, and we had both been dying to go to Sketch for so long that we both knew we had to try it.

Of course the tea and cake meal at Sketch was only part of our long goodbye-day of shopping, walks around London and the Southbank Centre Festival and the Rekorderlig lodge there. As none of us wanted to say goodbye we just kept on doing more and more stuff until the sun had gone down and we had no choice but to get back home.

Tea at Sketch

Sketch has quite a few different restaurants, and even though we were dying to visit the gallery (aka the pink room), we ended up with some tea and cakes at The Parlour instead. Even though Sketch is not the most affordable of places, we were pleasantly surprised that our cute little meal did not really at all blow our budget. And of course, you really do get what you pay for: the cakes were the tastiest thing I have ever tried, melting on the tongue and giving out so much flavour. They all had quite unique names, so to be honest I do not remember exactly what we ordered, but mine was just like a modern twist on the lemon meringue pie, while Georgina’s was like a mixture of small filled profiteroles. Both so delicious that writing about them makes my mouth watery!

Tea at Sketch

Even though Sketch is a bit more expensive than the average café and restaurant, I would definitely recommend going there if you have a special occasion your celebrating. I am still dying to try out the Afternoon Tea at the Gallery, so I have been dreaming about celebrating my 21st birthday there. We’ll see…

Even though I love single eyeshadows and blushes, there is something so fun and luxurious about a great palette. But luckily, all of them are not as expensive as they look. When I saw these drugstore ones from Makeup Revolution, I instantly fell in love. I have been lusting for the blush palette for a long time, so I finally decided to get it as a little pre-christmas gift for myself. But, the eyeshadow palette I actually got for free (and you can as well). Wanna know how? Just keep reading.

Makeup Revolution Palettes

I was buying a few stockings fillers for an advent calendar, and ended up with a lovely eyeshadow palette from Makeup Revolution. But as I was swatching and falling in love with all of the palettes, I couldn’t help but buy one for myself as well. Even though I loved all of the eye shadows, I decided to go for a blush palette. I have so many eye shadow palettes and single eyeshadows in my collection, but almost no blushes, so I thought I should prioritise that at the moment. But, as I was about to pay for my palettes, the lady behind the counter found a selection of three palettes and asked me which one I would like. Without me even noticing it, Superdrug had an offer where if you spent more than £8 on Makeup Revolution, you got a eyeshadow palette for free. You can imagine how happy I got! So I walked out with a eyeshadow palette for a gift, a blush palette for myself and a eyeshadow palette for me as well, all for £12 only. Lucky me!

I have just barely tried out the palettes for now, but I already love them. The pigmentation is so great, the colours are rich and beautiful and you just get so much value for your money. So either if you are looking for a great little christmas gift for a makeup lover, or you are in the need of some new and cheap makeup yourself, I would definitely recommend checking out Makeup Revolution!

It is December and it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas  Even though the sun has been shining and the temperature has been quite high here in London for the past few days, December is definitely here and I am so excited for it! (as you may have noticed) I decided not to put up an advent calendar on my blog this year, as I have so many deadlines and things to do before going back to Norway and not a lot of time to blog this next week. But, since a lot of you might want to join some other calendars, I thought I would share some with you here:

ChristmasPhotography by Jade Greenbrooke Photography

First of all my blog platform Femelle has a daily calendar with lots of great prices. You just have to answer a simple question to be a part of it, which I have done every day lately. There are also some Femelle bloggers who has their own calendars set up, for example the sweetest Iselinn and Christine, who both have some amazing prices and discount codes to give away!  The lovely Reidun Beate also has a advent calendar going on, but instead of a new price every day she has a whole bunch of great things to give away every Sunday – pretty amazing right? And if that is still not enough for you, there is also always some Femelle bloggers having a giveaway or two, like Elise and Benedicte is now. Be sure to check out all their links and maybe you will be the lucky winner of a gift or two? Just a few tips from me, enjoy! ❄

Disclaimer: I sadly do not know if all/ any of these giveaways are international, but I thought I would write it in English nevertheless. If you are interested in joining any one of them, just ask!

December is here (crazy right?) and I am sure I am not the only one dealing with lots of work and deadlines at the moment. But still I think it is important to take time of to hang out with friends and enjoy this festive month. At least that is what I, Georgina and Bethany did last week, when we met up for a festive shoot for Miriam Salat Christmas Campaign:

We met up at Southbank, all craving a warm coffee. It was surprisingly not that chilly outside, so we sat down for a while. Catching up over coffee is one of my favourite things to do, and especially in this hectic season.

Miriam Salat Christmas

We all wore our beautiful Miriam Salat Jewellery; exclusive and exquisite pieces which would make any girl happy for christmas. We had planned on taking some photos for their Christmas Campaign. We had the theme of “city chic” in mind, in addition to embracing our friendship and London city-culture through natural fun photographs.

Miriam Salat Christmas

We sipped our coffees, ate some snacks and talked about everything, before going out for a stroll.

I love walking along Southbank as you can explore the Thames, London Eye, Big Ben/ Parliament, Southbank Centre and more. In addition South Bank also put up their Christmas Market at this time of year, where you can find lots of goodies.

Miriam Salat Christmas Miriam Salat ChristmasMiriam Salat ChristmasMiriam Salat ChristmasMiriam Salat Christmas

We took so many photos, trying our best to work with the awful wind that never seemed to stop. We all regretted saying that it wasn’t too chilly earlier, because now we were all suddenly freezing. We decided that the best thing to do was to hop into a Starbucks, grab something hot and relax for a bit. Then, after our bodies felt a bit warm again, we stepped outside again and sat down – on a step. All tired and giggly, we talked and laughed and enjoyed each others company, while showing our favourite Miriam Salat Jewellery pieces to each other.

It was a perfect day, just how I hope every day will be this month. December might feel like a stressful month due to deadlines and more. But remember to take time to be with your friends and enjoy what is left of this year. If you are ever going through something stress- or painful, remember that you are surrounded by your loved ones, friends and family, that will always be there for you. I am so lucky to know these girls, in addition to everyone else both here in London and in Norway. Embrace December, and let your loved ones know how much they mean to you – xx
