I have never been a fan of New Years Resolutions, the idea that you were not good enough in something last year and that this is your chance to make it up. As the clock hit 00:00 and another year was here, I did not tell myself that I would exercise more, eat healthier or work harder. I simply agreed that after quite a problematic 2015, 2016 would be my year, where I would be healthy and happy. To me, that is what will be most important this year, the feeling of happiness and self control. If you are not sure how to get there, read through my list of New Years Resolutions for everyone and see what I think is important to do this year:

1. Breathe

I don’t know about you, but 2015 was quite a hectic year for me. We live in a fast moving world with so many expectations and demands surrounding you, so it is easy to get caught up in stress. Even though I always do try to plan ahead, some things come unexpected in life and can change your course completely. If you find yourself struggling with stress or any other overwhelming bad emotion, take a step back and breathe. No matter if it is school/ work, relationships or anything else stressing you out, remember that you need to put yourself and your health first in any situation. So if you do ever feel like you need a break from life, do it. Take some time to breathe and get your life back on track. This does not make you weak for “giving up”, it makes you strong for fighting back.

2. Explore

I think we all have an urge in us to travel, to explore what is unknown to us. I am sure everyone would love to travel the world and see somewhere new, but sometimes life gets in the way. Traveling can be expensive and time consuming, not as well suited for every lifestyle. But just because you can not take a month of work or afford a plane ride and hotel, that does not mean you can not explore. As everyone is seeking to travel away from where they are at the moment, I think it is important to actually stop and look around on the beauty already surrounding you. It might be your hometown, which you never truly appreciated, an area where you live that you’ve never really paid much attention to, or somewhere not too far away, where you can quickly get by a cheap train ride. The world is full of great and grand places, but what makes the place you are right now any less great and grand?

3. Read

With the age of the internet, social media, blogs, online news and movies, I think a lot of us don’t take enough time off to read. Reading is such an important thing, it will develop you in so many ways and can learn you a lot about life. It can also improve your writing and language skills, but most importantly it will give you some time off from the hectic world around us. I think that reading before going to sleep is a really good habit to keep, as it gives your brain some time to adjust and relax before going to sleep. Turn of your phone, light some candles and read a few pages. It will do so much for you.

4. Love

I know, I know, could this list be any more cliche? Well, “life lessons” often are, but they are still important to be reminded of sometimes. If you have only one resolution this year, make sure it is to love and be loved.  You have so many people around you, friends and family, who love you with all of their heart, so be sure to love them back. Show and tell them how much they mean to you. And more than anything, be sure to love yourself. Prioritise yourself first, appreciate yourself and don’t put yourself down in any way. Get out of any bad relationship/ friendship or habits you have that beat you down. This will be your year to be yourself and be happy.

5. Take care of yourself

In the lines of everything on this list, it is important that you truly take care of yourself. For a lot of people the standard New Years Resolutions is to eat healthier and exercise more, which is one way of taking care of your mental and physical health. This is of course really important and something you should keep in mind, but I don’t like the idea of starting the new year completely changing your habits in the pursuit of a better body or whatever. Instead, agree that balance is key to everything in your life. Do try to exercise more and eat healthier by making more food from scratch, but also allow yourself pizza and chocolate and wine and days where all you do is relax on the sofa. Agree to try to work harder and be better, but also accept it when something comes up and you simply need to take a step back. Always have yourself in mind, your mental and physical health, in everything you do and never push yourself more than you can handle. Take care of yourself, because 2016 will be your year and it would be a shame if you weren’t around to enjoy it.
