Even though I am happy to be back in Norway for a while, there are of course a lot of things I miss about London. One of them is the simple joy of eating out, something I rarely do here in Norway. While in London, I try my best to budget my everyday habits so that I can enjoy a meal out every now and then, even on a student budget. London has so much to offer, and a lot of it is so affordable as well, so how can I resist? My Instagram feed is always showing me amazing food photos from around the city, and I have a list full of places I want to visit. These past two years I have tried out quite a few different London restaurants, and today I wanted to share my top five favourites that are definitely worth the hype (and queueing). If you are planning a trip to London, I really recommend you to check out these places:

The BREAKFAST CLUB – London Bridge, Soho, Hoxton, Brighton and more

Long before I even moved to London, I knew that one of the first places I wanted to visit was The Breakfast Club. As a lover of everything American- and breakfast food-related, I could not help but drool over the picture perfect pancakes and other meals. Even though there is almost definitely a queue to get in the door, the wait is totally worth it. I always end up ordering the Pancakes with Berries and Cream, but I have also tried a few other dishes on the menu. I can assure you that there is something for everyone here.

I RECOMMEND ORDERING: PANCAKES WITH BERRIES AND CREAM (THE BEST CREAM EVER). PAIRED WITH FRESHLY SQUEEZED ORANGE JUICE IN THE DAYTIME, AND YOUR FAVOURITE COCKTAIL (Mojito anyone?) IN THE EVENING.

Franco Manca – Coven Garden, Soho, Tottenham Court Road, Brighton and more

If I could only eat one meal for the rest of my life, it would undoubtedly be pizza. And that pizza would be from Franco Manca. Never have I ever experienced such a perfect, rich and tasty pizza outside the borders of Italy. I found Franco Manca through hypes on Instagram and internet reviews, and I got too tempted not to try it. I have since my first visit queued to get into Franco Manca countless times on different locations, and I always end up with the same perfectly tasting pizza on my plate. It is the one restaurant I have to drag all of my friends and family visiting me to. And the one place I always recommend when someone asks for advice on where to eat. Not only is it the best pizza ever, it is also ridiculously inexpensive.

I RECOMMEND ORDERING: YOUR PERSONAL PIZZA FAVOURITE (MARGHERITA FOR ME PLEASE). PAIRED WITH HOMEMADE LEMONADE IN THE DAYTIME, AND HOUSE BEER OR WINE IN THE EVENING.
DSC03337-1Freak Shakes @ Maxwell’s Bar & Grill – Covent Garden

When talking about hyped up London foods, I could not go without mentioning the latest Instagram trend: Freakshakes. The indulgent, dribbling, ice cream desserts masquerading as milkshakes, that bring together such delights as doughnuts, caramels, marshmallows, sauces, and of course a massive amount of cream. As a newly-started Australian trend there is not a lot of places that offer freakshakes in London yet. But at Maxwell’s Bar & Grill, conveniently placed in Covent Garden, they serve them. And they serve them good. If you are wondering if they live up to your Instagram-fuelled expectations, the answer is yes. Just make sure that you have a few hours to spare when ordering this, as it will make you feel fuller than ever before. So. Much. Milkshake.

I RECOMMEND ORDERING: YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE FROM TODAYS FREAKSHAKES, AND A GLASS OF WATER TO POUR IT DOWN WITH.

Meat Liquor – W1, COVENT GARDEN, HOXTON AND BRIGHTON

I have mentioned on my blog before that I have really been much of a burger-person. Well, that was before I discovered Meat Liquor. Hidden right behind the crowded Oxford Street lies a basement-like room with little lighting and loud music. And the best burgers and fries in town. The burgers and fries at Meat Liquor are not only fresh and tasteful, they are unique and different. Even though I come for the burger and atmosphere, I definitely stay and keep coming back for the sides: Hippie Fries (covered with an amazing sauce and lots of onion) and Deep Fried Mac and Cheese Bites.

I RECOMMEND ORDERING: bacon cheeseburger with hippie fries and deep fried mac and cheese bites. Paired with water and your favourite cocktail.

London Food Sketch

Sketch – w1

Sketch, the most instagrammable and hyped up place in London. Visiting is an adventure in itself, and the toilets are the coolest place ever. If you go to Sketch, it is not purely for the meal, but for the full experience. With several different restaurants and cafés at the house, you can find something suited for any meal. If you are looking for a unique place serving delicious food, look no further. Even though Sketch might be more on the pricier side compared to the rest of the list, it is so worth the splurge.

I RECOMMEND ORDERING: Afternoon Tea in The Pink Room (google it and you’ll understand why). Remember to book in advance.

You might have heard of some of these restaurants from before, or they might all be completely new to you. Either way, they are in my opinion definitely all worth the hype surrounding them, and therefore also worth your visit. Be sure to keep these places in mind the next time you are in London and your stomach is craving a delicious meal.
